The "turkey trot" (aka Grizzly Bear) was a dance that rose to prominence in the early part of the 20th Century. It was done to fast ragtime music such as the “Maple Leaf Rag” from about 1900 to 1910. As with most fads, it was driven by the young counterculture of the day but fell quickly out of favor due to the introduction of the “foxtrot” that became popular in 1914. The later was certainly more conservative in nature and was performed to a waltz type beat, therefore probably more acceptable to the church. But before it fell out of favor, people were arrested and did in fact go to jail for this scandalous behavior. It does make you wonder if people of 1912 were teleported to today, what would be going through their mind!
