692. Pensacola's October Loss 10-1-1943 WWII

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

US Navy Aviation Machinists Mate 3rd Class Horace E. Bell was born in Brushy Creek, Conecuh County, Alabama in 1923, the son of John Henry Bell (1876-1939) and Molly Virginia Bell (1888-1946). His father was a farmer in Brushy Creek before passing away on August 10, 1939 in Escambia County, Alabama. Late the following year Horace and his mother were living in Pensacola at 200 West Romano Street.

From this point on, there is little information as to Horace's upbringing or family life. We know he left grammar school to enter the work force. And we know that he enlisted in the US Navy and was trained as an aviation machinists mate and reached the rank of 3rd Class. In this capacity he was attached to a Navy patrol plane and was lost at sea on October 1, 1943 and never recovered. His name is listed on the "missing" plaque at the North Africa Military Cemetery in Tunis plus a "memorial" stone at the Canaan Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery at Barnett Crossroads in Escambia County, Alabama next to his parents.
