Tech 5 Virgil Smith Covington was born in Shubuta, Mississippi on January 16, 1918. Little is known about his background except that he enlisted in the US Army on May 11, 1943 and was sent to Camp Blanding, Florida for induction and processing. During this process, he claimed a grammar school education and that he was married. On his 1940 military registration card he had also listed a Mrs. Mable Sidener (also spelled Sidner) first as his housekeeper and then his mother. But there is no record of Mable (nee Filmore) ever being married to anyone but George Dewey Sidner. After induction, he was assigned to the 51st Munition Ordnance Company in Hawaii. He is listed as dying on December 8, 1945 due to "DNB" that stands for "Dead Non Battle" meaning he was not killed in battle. Even though this was several months after the war ended there still could be circumstances that brought about his military death. He was originally buried in the Schofield Barracks Cemetery, however along with many others he was disinterred in 1949 and moved to the National Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu.
