641. Pensacola's August Loss 8-21-1945

Walter Hugh Cook was born in Delhi, Ontario, Canada on August 23, 1881, the son of Henry Wilkinson Cook (1846-1937 and Eliza Sarah Jane Birdsall (1846-1907). His father was born and died in Ontario, Canada as did his mother. Walter would come to America through Cleveland, Ohio on August 16, 1898 and would serve in the US Army for 39-years.


During his career he would marry Eleva Anatasia Seifert (1898-1998) in 1913 and then serve on the Mexican border against the famous outlaw Pancho Villa. This tour of duty was followed by sixteen months in France during WWI. He occupied several positions with the Army including a tour as a "Warrant Officer" at Ft. McPherson in Fulton County, Georgia. After Pearl Harbor he took over the position of commanding officer of the Quartermaster Corps at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He was later stationed at the Stark General Hospital at Charleston, SC prior to his retirement in December 1944.


He returned home to his wife Eleva in Pensacola and passed away at the US Naval Hospital on August 21, 1945. He was buried in Barrancas National Cemetery where he was joined by Eleva in 1998. His son Walter Jr. would graduate from West Point in January 1943 and retire as a Lt. Colonel having served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
