668. Davisville Recreation Center 1953

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

Once upon a time the residents of Davisville, Escambia County, Florida got together and built a man-made lake and a recreational center for the residents of the community. For those of you who do not know where Davisville is, it is on Hwy 97 just south of the Alabama State Line and Atmore, Alabama. It derives its name from the family of Joseph David Davis from Marengo County, Alabama who settled there at the turn of the last century.

The question is "Where is this recreation center located?" When I was a small child, I remember baptisms performed in Pine Barren Creek that runs through the center of Davisville. And I seem to recall that at one time they had put a dam across the creek that created a small lake or pond just east of the Pine Barren Baptist Church. Dams across the creek and others in the area were common in the early 1900's because they floated cut timber down them and used the dams to hold water to release thus floating the logs downstream. But the damn I remember was in the early 1950's and corresponds possibly to this park. The article describes the location as a thickly wooded area at the "head of Pine Barren Creek about a mile east of Highway 97."

The article is dated September 13, 1953, and mentions such Davisville residents as Mrs. Ruth Godwin, Mrs. Sam Tichi, Elmer Jones, O. M. Miller, Bert Mason, Mrs. Verna Mae Davison, Mrs. Mabel Hodgen, and Mrs. John Davis.

If anyone has any additional information about its location or what became of it please share.
