787. Pensacola May 1918 Loss WWI

Updated: Feb 26, 2022

US Army Private John Alford from Pensacola, Florida was inducted or enlisted in the military sometime prior to May 1918. He was most likely at Camp Sherman near Chillicothe, Ohio that contained the regiments of the 317th Engineer Infantry, 317th Engineer Train, and the 325th Field Signal Battalion. In a Pensacola News Journal article of May 17, 1918 he is listed as having passed away from non-combat related issues. His remains are listed as having been delivered to 413 Tarragona Street that happens to be the home of Susie Harper, wife of Charles Harper, a local bayman. What relation, if any, between Alford and Harper is unknown. Regardless, he died in the service of his country during her greatest need. He was buried in the Zion Cemetery with full military honors.
