Navy Ensign Frederick Andrew Smith was born in Egerton, Wisconsin in 1913, the son of Frederick G. Smith (1870-1959) and Stella Lee Ogden (1881-1973). His father supported his family as the manager of the composing room of the Wisconsin Tobacco Reporter (later named the Edgerton Reporter) where he retired in 1948. He and Stella married in 1910 and he would pass away in Janesville, Wisconsin.
After graduating high school Andrew attended the University of Wisconsin before enlisting in the US Navy aviation program. Upon winning his wings as a naval aviator he was promptly married on April 1, 1939 to Miss Betty Rose McMillan, the daughter of Almon Gage McMillan (1885-1976) and Irene Clara Gilmore (1888-1952). Betty had graduated from Pensacola High School in 1937 and attended Washington College in Chestertown, Md in 1938. Her father was a retired engineer with the L&N railroad and had lived in Pensacola and Mulat most of his life.
After their marriage they set up house keeping at 1509 East Jackson Street until such time Frederick was transferred to the West Coast. He was the pilot of a Navy bomber on April 25, 1942 flying out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska when he crashed and was killed. His body was recovered and brought back home to be buried with military honors in St. John's Cemetery.
