Sgt. James Franklin Richardson was born on August 25, 1930 in Knoxville, TN, the fifth of eight children of William “Willie” M. Richardson (1896-1974) and ELiza Ann "Liza" Heatherly (1899-2005). The Richardson family lived in the small Santa Rosa community of Harold before James’ enlistment in the US Army in 1947. Thrown into the chaos of the Korean War, his 31st Infantry Regiment was decimated during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in November-December 1950. During the fighting in sub-zero temperatures, James was captured on December 2, 1950 and later killed at the POW encampment on February 23, 1951. His remains were returned to Milton in 1955 and buried in the First Baptist Church of Harold Cemetery.
