297. Atmore's Blue Devils c1926

Escambia County High School was built in 1909 and burnt down in 1923. Another building was built on the same site and opened 1924-1926 and was occupied until the current school was built in 1961. This photo was most likely taken sometime around 1926 since the fullback Herbert Hall (left) was born in 1908 and Robert Alexander (right) in 1910. Herbert was the son of David Samuel Hall and Mary Adeline "Polly" Shepard. And ironically he was raised across the street from the current high school on the northeast corner of Lindberg and South Presley Streets in Atmore. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to Houston, Texas and became a laborer with Shell Oil Company in the oil refinery business. There he met and married Helen Louise Crenshaw in 1934, a union that would produce two daughters. He retired in 1973 and passed away in Willis, Texas in 1992 and was buried there in the Forest Park Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Gordon was born in 1910 and was the son of William Yancey Gordon (1862-1931) and Nannie Abernathy (1875-1967). His father supported his family first as a traveling solicitor then as a farmer. After graduation, Robert worked several jobs until he married Miriam Roberts (1919-1988) in 1936. By 1940, he was working for the Alabama Power Company and would pass away in 1991 and was joined my Miriam in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.

This photo was sponsored by the United Bank of Atmore. This was more likely the Blue Devils football team of c1926 since my uncle Herbert Harry Hall (left) was born in 1908. Malc (center

has not been fully identified and Robert Gordon (right) is most likely Robert Alexander Gordon.
