19. FSU versus Florida

Updated: Apr 2, 2022

Given the spirited rivalry between Florida's two premier colleges, there appears to be a fact that might be embarrassing to both. In 1949, the name of the University of Florida's "yearbook" was called the "Seminole" the current nickname for Florida State University. The question would be who is more embarrassed the Gators or the Seminoles?

The yearbook belonged to a Pensacola High School graduate in the Class of 1944. Francis Woodrow Stone was a straight "A" student who skipped a grade making him finish his high school studies at the tender age of 17. His brother Gregory Luce Stone III, PHS class of 1943, had already been drafted right out of high school and was now serving in George Patton's 3rd Army in Europe. Francis " Bubba" Stone finally joined the US Army Air Corp in 1944 and later the US Navy in 1945 but was never sent overseas. In 1947, he enrolled in the first "male" class of Florida State before transferring to the University of Florida where he obtained the infamous University

of Florida Seminole yearbook in question. Gregory would pass away in 1996 followed by his brother Francis in 2000.
